Acid reflux is the unpleasant and often painful condition of acids from the stomach moving from the stomach and back up the esophagus towards the mouth. This movement is called reflux, and can result in the stomach fluids actually reaching the mouth for some people, and it happens when the muscle at the mouth of the esophagus does not close to stop the stomach fluids moving upwards.

Obviously, if you are a frequent sufferer of acid reflux or heartburn, then you need to seek medical attention to see what is recommended by your doctor. The chances are they will recommend anti-acids, probably prescription drugs, as you have no doubt already tried over the counter antacids.

But are there natural acid reflux cures to help you? There are definitely some things that you can consider to help reduce, and even stop acid reflux before it does any more damage to your esophagus. The first thing to realize is that some foods cause there to be more acid in the stomach to process it. This leads to acid reflux, so by reducing the amount of these foods that you eat, you should be able to get your acids under control.

Do not lay down after a meal, as this gives your stomach an easier time to release its fluids into the esophagus. Try to keep upright for at least 30 minutes after eating. You might want to sit upright, or go for a walk, remembering that exercising is good for your overall health.

Try not to eat anything within 2 hours of going to bed. If you find that acid reflux is keeping you awake, or reducing the quality of your sleep, think about investing in an acid reflux wedge pillow. Try sleeping on your left side rather than right, as this helps keep the stomach lower too, and reduces the pressure on the muscle between the stomach and the esophagus.

A large proportion of the country suffer from the symptoms of acid reflux to varying degrees. This in itself tells us that something is wrong with our diets if so many are suffering. Stop your acid reflux by eating a better diet? Absolutely, you have the power to stop the reflux by controlling what you eat! Don’t panic at this stage, it needn’t be as drastic as it might sound. One of the big differences to reducing acid reflux may just be the size of your meals, especially those in an evening before you go to bed for the night.

See how this can help should it not help you, you can always go back to your old ways. Eat smaller meals, especially your last meal of the day. When your stomach has less food to digest, it needs less acid to do so, and it can process the food more efficiently than when the stomach is full to overflowing. Because you are eating less at meal times, add some small snacks to the day, so that rather than eating 3 times a day, you are now eating 5 or 6 times each day, but smaller quantities each time.

This should help your digestion and reduce the acid reflux. It is very important that you do not go to bed with a full stomach, since lying down will allow the stomach acid and food to flow back up the esophagus and into your mouth, very unpleasant. So allow your food a couple of hours to digest before you lie down, and if you are in the habit of laying on the sofa after dinner, don’t stay upright and go for a walk instead. It will do you more good!

If you are still having acid reflux trouble, find out what foods are causing this by tracking what you eat, and then seeing when the symptoms occur. Acidic fruits like grapefruit, oranges and tomatoes are often thought to cause problems of acid reflux, as well as the high fat foods. This means that pizzas get a double hit since they are fatty and tomato based.

There is also something else that you could try, and that is called food combining. You can still eat whatever you do now, but you do not always eat the same combination of foods. For instance, I only ever eat fruit with other fruit, and since making this change, my acid reflux has stopped. If you constantly have acid reflux, and it is stopping you from sleeping, then there are a few things you can do to lessen the symptoms while you try to sleep. You could try raising the head of your bed a little, so that your head is raised a little higher than your stomach which will make it harder for the acid to travel back up the esophagus.
